We’re excited to share our top tips for making the most of your stay at our lovely St. John and Coastguards Cottage during the festive season. With its rich history, undeniable charm, and warm hospitality, Rye promises to make your holiday truly memorable.

1. Christmas Shopping Extravaganza

Rye’s independent boutiques and speciality shops make it a haven for Christmas shopping. At Sailors of Rye, you’ll find gorgeous ethical clothing and homeware from independent brands, perfect for that unique present. For a luxurious, vintage piece, Soap and Salvation offers antiques, art and other small objects, each beautifully selected and curated by the owners at their beautifully restored Chapel. If you want to be inspired, their stunning library and bookshop is filled with rare titles covering art, fashion, and architecture.

While exploring Rye, don’t miss The Monastery, a former 14th-century Augustinian friary that offers an eclectic selection of antique and vintage pieces dating from the 17th century to the 1980s. If you’re looking for a tailor-made shopping experience, make sure to book an appointment in advance and get immersed in the festive atmosphere. The Monastery’s charm and character make it a standout destination for holiday shopping enthusiasts.

2. Savor the Craft

Rye is a treasure trove of artisanal delights, perfect for the season. For something truly indulgent, head over to Whitehouse Bakery, renowned for its exceptional bread and seasonal pastries. Last year their chicken, stuffing and cranberry pie was a holiday sensation - so don’t miss the chance to make your festive table a celebration of flavour. Café des Fleurs is another treat for the senses, with the aroma of fresh flowers and home-baked cakes filling the room. Pick up one of their stunning blooming bouquets to brighten your home or a beautifully crafted wreath to adorn your door.

For chocolate lovers, Rye Chocolates offers an array of handmade delights that are as beautiful as they are indulgent - ideal for gifting or savouring yourself. Their festive selection is truly amazing, with the Peruvian dark chocolate with orange whisky marmalade being an absolute standout for us. Of course, you shouldn’t miss making a stop at the original Knoops, where you can warm up with a bespoke hot chocolate, choosing from a range of chocolate percentages to suit your palate. We reckon, their Christmas hot chocolate gift set would make the sweetest gift!

Rye is well known for its wine and beer-making culture, and there’s no better time to experience it than during the festive season. At The Winery, you’ll find a carefully curated selection of wines, perfect for elevating your celebrations or gifting to the wine connoisseur in your life. Their expert recommendations will make it easy to find something truly special, while you enjoy a glass paired with a fine English cheese board. For a glamorous night out, head to The Grapevine Champagne & Jazz Bar - their sophisticated venue combines elegant fine champagne, spirits and cocktails with the vibrant energy of a secret jazz soirée. With its intimate ambience and performances 5 nights a week.

3. A Christmas Feast

After a day of shopping, Rye’s dining options provide the perfect setting for a festive meal. At The Union, you’ll be greeted with the warmest atmosphere, complemented by hearty seasonal dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant and bar, set in a beautiful 15th-century building in the heart of the town, is the ideal spot for a relaxed meal that feels like a warm hug on a chilly winter’s day. For a modern European grill menu, head to The George Grill, where history meets elegance. Their menu celebrates the best of regional produce, such as freshly caught seafood from Rye Bay and Romney Marsh lamb, always keeping their wood-charcoal grill at the heart of their culinary philosophy. Last but certainly not least, The Standard Inn offers great cooking and a cosy ambience, perfect for a hearty meal during the holiday season. Whether you're stopping by for a quick bite by the fire or indulging in a full Christmas feast, this traditional pub embodies the festive spirit, making it a must-visit!

5. Festive Activities

Christmas wouldn’t be complete without diving into the festive activities and Rye surely offers some amazing over the holidays. Walking around the quaint, cobbled streets, with all the fairy lights and ornaments in every home and shop window, is something you have to experience. End your journey with a visit to the Ypres Tower of the Rye Castle Museum, to learn more about the town’s history amid seasonal decorations, and afterwards, stop by the adjoining 17th-century Ypres Castle Inn for a great beer, cask and keg, from independent producers or a glass of wine from their low-intervention, organic wine list.

Make time for the St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival, a beloved tradition where the church is adorned with creatively decorated trees from the local community and then climb up the Church’s tower for the most incredible views of Rye Bay. For a moment of peace and reflection, attending Midnight Mass at the historic St Mary’s Church is an experience not to be missed.  The historic setting, bathed in candlelight, and the hymns offer a moment of serenity amid the holiday bustle.
